Gary C. Howard grew up in the coal-mining region of Southern West Virginia. He earned a PhD in biological sciences from Carnegie Mellon University and completed postdoctoral fellowships at Harvard and Johns Hopkins. After spending 11 years in two small biotech companies in the Bay Area, he worked 22 years as a science editor and writer for the Gladstone Institutes in San Francisco. He continues to edit and write books.
In 2013, Gary was appointed to fill a vacancy on the Board of Education of Castro Valley Unified School District. Since then, he was elected in 2014 and reelected in 2018. He and his wife Shirley have lived in Castro Valley for over 28 years and their two daughters attended Proctor, Creekside, and Castro Valley High School before going on to college.
Gary is active in the Rotary Club of Castro Valley and is on the board of directors of the Castro Valley/Eden Area Chamber of Commerce.
Our Castro Valley schools are excellent because of dedicated educators, committed administrators, and supportive parents and community members. I am thrilled to be part of this outstanding team. But there is more to do to make our schools the very best they can be for every student. I believe I have brought a new and critical but constructive look at all of our systems. Furthermore, my training and experience in biomedical research allow me understand what students need to succeed in today’s highly technical and competitive world. We also need to prepare our students for great careers that do not need college, and I am happy to be Castro Valley’s representative on the board of the Eden Area Regional Occupational Program. Importantly, I believe I can communicate and work effectively with parents, teachers, classified staff, administrators, and community members. My focus will be on several key issues: recovering from the pandemic, improving the educational experience of every student in the district, developing solid plans for the future needs of the district, prudently managing the resources of the district, effectively communicating with stakeholders, and encouraging parent and community involvement in our schools. Thank you.
